Camping Orée du Bois - Hourtin

Water fun is not an afterthought here, but the highlight of the day. The modern aqua park has a large heated pool where you can swim laps in peace, while the kids have fun on the four slides – two of which are huge and a favourite with teenagers. For the little ones, there is a clear paddling pool with fountains, where they can splash around safely.

Surrounding the pool is a sunny terrace with sun beds, where you can enjoy a coffee or a book while keeping an eye on the kids. And if that's not enough: 2.5 kilometres away is the Lac d’Hourtin, a vast freshwater lake with gently sloping shores, ideal for swimming or supping. Fancy some waves? Within 15 minutes, you'll be on the rugged beach of the Atlantic coast.

At the campsite itself, there is something to do every day. Our children invariably started their mornings on the inflatable bouncy castles or in the playground, while we had a leisurely breakfast on the veranda with fresh croissants from the campsite store. In summer, there's an extensive entertainment program for all ages: crafts, sports tournaments, games and even evening shows.

Teenagers will quickly find their niche here, too, with activities just for them – and of course, plenty of places to just chill out or make new friends. Don't feel like cooking? Then walk over to the snack bar for a tasty takeaway, or sip a cocktail on the bar's terrace while the kids carry on in the playroom.

The Lac d’Hourtin-Carcans is not only wonderful for swimming, but also perfect for a picnic or a canoe trip. The surrounding bike trails lead you right through the forest to the dunes and past quiet lakes. Bikes can be rented at the campground

A visit to Hourtin Plage should not be missed. This cozy coastal town has nice beach bars, ice cream parlors and markets selling local products. For an outing with some culture and ice cream, cozy Soulac-sur-Mer is perfect. And those who want to drive a little further can take a day trip to Bordeaux, for beautiful squares, stores and terraces. But honestly? Most families prefer to just stay at the campsite. Because here it's just right.
