Camping Apollonia

On hot days – and there are plenty of those in Crete – cooling off is a must. Fortunately, Camping Apollonia has a lovely swimming pool with loungers all around. Large enough for a refreshing dip and clear enough to keep a close eye on the children. There is also a separate, shallow paddling pool, so even the little ones can splash around safely. You pay a small fee of three euros per person each time, but that immediately includes a drink. While the children swim, you can sip a frappé or a refreshing drink in the shade. So an afternoon swim suddenly becomes a moment for yourself. For those who prefer to go to the sea: the Plakias sandy beach is only 40 meters from the campsite. Ideal for a day of building sandcastles, paddling and lounging overlooking the clear blue waters.

Camping Apollonia is a small-scale, friendly campground where you will quickly feel at home. No crowded streets or mass tourism, but a friendly atmosphere. Children can have fun in the playground and they quickly make contact with other children.

The campsite's restaurant serves delicious Greek food and simple meals for the whole family. Think moussaka, grilled meats, salads – but pizza and fries are also on the menu. The service is friendly and relaxed, just the way you like it on vacation. The mini-market is small but convenient, with fresh bread, basic products and, of course, something tasty for in between. 

Next to the campsite is the bike hire, so hire a bike and head out to explore the area!

Plakias itself is a cozy coastal town with a relaxed atmosphere. You can easily walk to the promenade with taverns’s, stores and ice cream parlors. In the harbor there are fishing boats bobbing and on the beach you will always find a place for your towel.

At a short distance away is the Kotsifou Gorge, a wonderful place for a short hike with children – adventurous, but doable. The Preveli Palm Beach, about a 20-minute drive away, is also highly recommended: a beach with palm trees and a river that flows into the sea. Great for a day out with picnic and swimming gear.

For a fun outing with a little more action, head to the village of Myrthios, above Plakias. Here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the bay and have a delicious meal in ééone of the taverns. And those in the mood for something special can take a boat trip along the southern coast or even to the island of Gavdos, as a day trip.
